UO should close during snow for safety of students, professors
It was utterly irresponsible of the University to maintain its regular schedule on Thursday. Apparently, the administration is either unaware that not all of its students live within a two-block radius of campus or simply unconcerned with their safety. I live at the top of Chambers and awoke to four inches of snow on the ground and two inches of mixed snow and ice on the roadways. KLCC reported that ODOT was urging everyone to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary, yet the University was not even on a delay. LTD was operating on a very limited snow route, meaning that my nearest operating stop was 1.5 miles down a steep and icy hill. Biking was completely out of the question. I fortunately had access to a vehicle that morning, but even then my car slid unnervingly on the road and was unable to come to a complete stop at several points.
Parcells keeping Cowboys waiting about 2007 return
Nearly two weeks after the Dallas Cowboys' season ended, Bill Parcells still hasn't decided whether he wants to keep coaching. Jerry Jones has told Parcells to take all the time he wants. At least, until the Feb. 1 deadline that's in his contract. Fans aren't as patient. Their need for an answer, one way or another, grows each day. His status remains the most-talked-about topic on local sports radio, with shows treating it like a hostage situation: Day X of Dallas under siege. (Thursday was No. 12.) With no word directly from Parcells, inquiring minds are left to read between the lines. That's led to theories such as: He's staying because he keeps showing up for work every day. If he was quitting, he'd be out by now; Tom Landry had the job for 29 years and needed only a few hours to gather his belongings.
Cops chase man to hospital
LUNENBURG -- Police arrested a 56-year-old Lunenburg man in the employees' parking lot at HealthAlliance Hospital/Leominster Wednesday after he led officers on a "slow-speed" car chase through three cities and towns, according to police Lt. James Marino. The pursuit started around 2 p.m. when William K. Learned allegedly refused to let rescue workers near his daughter, Jessica, 28, who had called an ambulance for herself and reported that she was having trouble breathing and had back pains, Marino said. After refusing to let rescue workers in to the house at 338 Electric Ave., Learned allegedly took his daughter in a black Ford Explorer and drove over his own lawn to avoid the ambulances and cruisers, according to Marino In the process, Learned almost hit Ofc. Patrick Barney, forcing him "to jump out of the way," Marino said.
